For Michele Harrison, it was a simple nightmare to get diagnosed by breast cancer soon after she returned from her honeymoon leisure in November 2005. She was diagnosed by stage IIb breast cancer, soon after which she underwent bilateral mastectomies in the year 2005 and 2006 followed by the reconstruction in 2007. Following a standard eight chemo sessions containing 4 treatments of Adriamycin/Cytoxan and four of Herceptin/Taxol, she continued with Herceptin, backed by Tamoxifen, for two complete years. By the end of the year 2009, she was assured of only 20% chances of its recurrence but to her disbelief, it returned back. Beyond the pink ribbons, special product fundraisers, and the pastel sea of color that marks October in 2010 she considered it to be a God’s plan. Even after a number of reoccurrences in a massive form, her faith in God and continued determination made her evolve as the best inspiration for several other cancer patients and their survival plans.
Currently, after pursuing her professional basic esthetics program, she works as a licensed skin care and makeup professional who owns her own free spa service centre to treat the cancer patients, who are either surviving or have already survived deadly cancer. It is further followed by an Oncology Spa Solutions three-day course in her area.
Then why keep your hands folded and wait for another hero to take up the cause of cancer and fight for the struggling ones?
October brings in the perfect time to raise awareness and work towards the betterment of the breast cancer patients. Being celebrated as the world cancer awareness month, it gives the most privileged platform to celebrate the joy of leading a breast cancer-free life and helping those who are in pain.
It becomes of utmost importance to stay protected and take the essential precautionary measures against Breast Cancer.
Here are a few prime precautionary measures that need to be kept in mind as suggested by GHP.
Here are a few precautionary measures suggested by the experts from GHP to minimize the risk of getting prone to Breast cancer:-
Regular exercise or physical movement is the best way to reduce the chances and also the reoccurrence chances in case of breast cancer survivors. However, a recent study in Cancer states that just 1/3rd of the survivors meet this recommendation.
Minimizing the alcohol intake automatically controls the risk. This makes the alcohol intake restricted to 1 glass of wine, 1 beer or 1 hard liquor drink a day and none for the rest of the week is OK.
Younger women who are prone to smoking have a higher risk of getting affected by breast cancer as compared to their non-smoking peers. So, it’s always recommended to quit smoking.
Being overweight not just increases the risk of breast cancer but, will also make you prone to a bunch of other diseases, too. Especially, for the women approaching menopause, weight control is a major cause to avoid the risk of breast cancer.
Breastfeeding is said to play a vital role in breast cancer prevention. The longer the lady breast-feeds; the greater are the protective effects for her.
Combination hormone therapies undertaken for over the tenure of three to five years automatically increase the risk of breast cancer in women. Consult your doctor for the other options that might involve non-hormonal therapies and medications or some of the other short-term hormone therapies.
Environmental pollution has been a major factor polluting the human body and making it prone to several diseases. Similar goes with the breast cancer, too. Apart from the environmental pollutants, certain medical-imaging methods, namely- computerized tomography also prove to be affecting the body. It is mainly due to the high doses of radiation they offer, that the chances of getting breast cancer increase with the raised radiation exposure. Thus, it is very important to reduce the body’s exposure to such tests.
Taking a good care of your body and keeping in mind the following risks involved, one can definitely minimize the risks of getting prone to breast cancer! In fact, the United States holds the record figures of over 3.1 million breast cancer survivors considering the above-mentioned precautions.
GHP takes a lead in raising awareness about the same, throughout the month of October, celebrating the World’s Breast Cancer awareness month.
